The Western Regional Police Command has arrested five individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Wassa East District, particularly in the Wassa Dormama area. The operation, which lasted several hours, saw several others fleeing the scene.

According to reports, the arrested individuals are part of a larger group of illegal miners polluting rivers in the area, contributing to the high levels of galamsey in the Western region. This has resulted in the destruction of water bodies and edible lands, leading to water shortages in most communities.

Police Call for Community Support

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Osei Akoto, leader of the Western Regional Police Command, has assured the public of the police’s commitment to dealing with all illegal mining activities in the area. He emphasized the need for maximum support from the communities, as they are the custodians of the land and are better positioned to identify areas where galamseyers operate.

Residents in the affected communities have commended the police and government for their actions, expressing relief that measures are being taken to address the menace. Mr. David Offei, an opinion leader in the Wassa East District, called for more action from the government, citing the helplessness of traditional authorities in the face of heavily armed illegal miners.

Prosecution of Arrested Individuals

Mr. Offei also stressed the need for those arrested to be prosecuted, highlighting the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. He noted that previous instances of arrested individuals being freed had emboldened the galamseyers, while innocent people who provided information became targets.

The police operation is part of a broader effort to combat illegal mining in the region. In March 2025, the Western Central Regional Police Command arrested 11 individuals, including four Chinese nationals, for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Bonsa River.

Community Action Against Galamsey

The police have urged residents to report any galamsey activities, emphasizing that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility. With the Western region facing severe water pollution and environmental degradation due to galamsey, the police and government are working to restore the area’s water resources and prevent further destruction.
