Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has expressed sorrow over the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, describing her death as a significant loss to Asanteman and to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In a statement issued yesterday and signed by Mr. Paul Afoko, he revealed that the news of the Queen Mother’s death reached him with a heavy heart, especially in the wake of the recent deaths of two prominent chiefs and a linguist within the Asante Kingdom.
“I am particularly saddened by such a devastating blow to the Otumfuo, on the loss of his only surviving sister and traditional mother,” he stated.
Mr. Afoko also reflected on the close cultural and personal ties he shares with the Asantehene, recounting the honour he received earlier this year when Otumfuo sent a high-level delegation to attend the funeral of his late father in Sandema, in the Upper East Region.
“I have been a beneficiary of the great honour bestowed upon me by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” he noted, adding that the gesture underscored the deep respect and unity among Ghana’s traditional authorities.
“I therefore join the many politicians, businesspeople, clergy, traditional rulers, Imams, and citizens from all walks of life who have come to recognise what a gem this country has in the Asantehene,” he intimated.
