The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to focus on delivering on their promises rather than engaging in political vendettas.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, 24 February, he warned the ruling party against pursuing political witch hunts and mass dismissals of workers.
“You have won. You have a promise to fulfil. Stay focused and do your work,” Afenyo-Markin urged.
He cautioned that chasing alleged corrupt officials and making politically motivated arrests could backfire, leading to a loss of goodwill.
Mass dismissals
The MP for Effutu also criticised the reported dismissals of employees in state institutions, stating that governance should not be about retaliatory actions.
“Even if there was a mass dismissal when Akufo-Addo took office in 2017, must we continue? Should that cycle continue?” he questioned.
He emphasised that governance is a continuum, and dismissing employees for political reasons does not serve the nation’s interests.
Afenyo-Markin further highlighted concerns about the dismissal of employees from state-owned limited liability companies, which he argued operate independently of government subventions.
“Why are they also sacking people? These institutions generate their own revenue. Their employment has no effect on the state’s fiscal position,” he stated.
The minority leader warned the NDC that power is fleeting and that their handling of governance issues, particularly employment, could hurt them politically.
“This power is like an ice block placed on your tongue. As soon as it gets there, it starts to melt,” he remarked, adding that political dissatisfaction often begins internally within ruling parties.
His comments come amid growing debates over public sector employment and governance practices, with concerns over job security and political interference remaining key issues in Ghana’s political landscape.
