The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has announced an indefinite suspension of all boxing matches in the country following the tragic death of 32-year-old super-middleweight Ernest Akushey.
Akushey reportedly collapsed shortly after a bout and later died despite efforts to save him. The suspension, officials say, will allow time for a comprehensive review of safety standards within the sport.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has promised reforms to improve medical checks, emergency response, and monitoring of boxers before and after fights. The incident has reignited debate over the adequacy of boxer welfare and whether enough is being done to safeguard athletes’ lives in Ghana’s vibrant boxing industry.
