Two Muslim groups, the Ghana Muslim Broadcast Journalist Association and the Northerners and Zongos Concern Youth Association Ghana [NAZCYAG], after a year of consultations and observation of how the creation of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry was doing, have saluted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Vice President Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia.
They are thankful to the appointing authority for showing concern to the people of Zongo, with creating a whole Ministry to steer the affairs of the Inner City and Zongos.
In a joint statement issued by the group and signed by veteran Hausa Broadcast Journalist, Alhaji Halidu Abubakar Galaxy, the group stated that the creation of the Zongo Ministry and the appointment of Dr. Mahamud Bawumia as the vice President had raised the image and projected Zongo communities in the country.
The Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry, he said, would improve the lives and living standards of people within the Zongo communities, as well as help reduce poverty and develop the talents in the Zongo youth in the area of football and other sporting disciplines.
He added that the Ministry started its work with sod-cutting for the construction of Astroturf and has outlined initiatives that would help the Zongo communities in diverse ways, and that it is in the right direction.
Alhaji Galaxy revealed that one year after the observation of the creation of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry, the associations have taken it upon themselves to use their platforms to promote and project the Ministry and Dr. Bawumia as well as educate the people within the Zongo communities on the need to support the agenda of the President Nana Addo, Dr. Bawumia, and the Ministry to achieve its goals of taking Zongo communities to higher level.
The coordinator of the Groups stated that the leaderships of the various Muslim Groups have at every opportunity praised the good policies in the Country with the specific reference to the creation of the Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry; Free Senior High School, One District Factory among other policies, by the NPP government.
As a campaign promise, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said it would assist Zongos – a predominantly Muslim settlement – with the setting up of a Zongo Development Fund to give such communities a face-lift
In line with this, President Akufo-Addo announced the creation of the Ministry for Inner City and Zongo Development at the Flagstaff House in Accra on Thursday January 12, 2017 and appointed Hon. Boniface Abubakar Saddique, as the sector Minister.
