The Osu Stool Council has petitioned the Ghana Police Service to prevent a planned procession by the Gborbu Wolomo to the Osu Mantse Palace, warning that such a move could spark violence in the area.
In a letter signed under the hand of Victor O. Nortey, Secretary to the Osu Council of Elders and delivered to the Regional Commander of Police at Tudu, the council—representing the principal traditional office holders of Osu—said the procession, reportedly scheduled anytime between now and 2 December 2025, is part of a campaign to install a rival Osu Mantse outside the bounds of Osu custom and tradition.
It said, “the Gborbu shrine and its operatives have no customary or traditional authority to pronounce who should be Osu Mantse,” the letter stated. “Such a procession would be fiercely resisted by the youth and people of Osu and may degenerate into chaos and violence.”
The petition comes amid a long-standing dispute over the Osu chieftaincy. Following the death of the late paramount chief on 21 November 2021, a majority of Osu kingmakers installed Notse Nii Nortey Owuo IV as Osu Mantse in February 2022. A minority faction, however, has claimed to install a rival chief, Teteete Nii Nortey Owuo IV, sparking legal proceedings currently before the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in Dodowa.
The elders accused individuals from Nungua’s Gborbu Shrine of spreading misinformation on social media, claiming authority over the Osu chieftaincy and planning to culminate their campaign with a public motorcade and demonstration at the palace.
The council is urging police to intensify security at the Osu Mantse Palace and prevent the rival faction from reaching the palace square, emphasizing the need to allow the Regional House of Chiefs to complete its judicial process in line with the 1992 Constitution and Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759).
Copies of the petition have also been sent to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, the CID Director-General, and local assembly authorities. Others include the Divisional Commander Osu, Cantonment and the District Commander Osu
