Minority Caucus in Parliament have flatly ignored the Public Order Act and embarked on a protest to the office of the Electoral Commission (EC).
The MPs who nearly clash with about 100 heavily armed riot police officers, yesterday forced their way into the headquarters of the Electoral Commission.
They are protesting against the election management body’s declared results of the recently-held general elections.
The MPs, led by Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, were mostly clad in black and kept daring the armed police officers to “shoot us” and “kill us”.
Meanwhile, the Police indicated that the MPs needed to have served notice of their protest to the law enforcement body in accordance with the Public Order Act but the MPs said they were just taking a walk.
The protest march by the Minority Caucus follows several pockets of demonstration across the country by members of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the Electoral Commission and its management, who they have accused of stealing victory for the incumbent.
The MPs were however prevented from going beyond a barricade around the Ridge Roundabout in Accra as they defied the orders of the police who said they were unaware of any walk by the Minority to the EC offices.
This turned chaotic as the police manhandled some of the MPs including Haruna Iddrisu, according to local media reports.
The Ghana Police Service has however warned the public against unlawful gatherings and demonstrations following the declaration of the results.
According to the police, such gatherings without prior notification amount to a breach of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
This can lead to various penalties “including imprisonment,” police have warned.
So far, the Police arrested 30 persons for demonstrating at the headquarters of the EC in Accra.
