Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is set to visit the Ministry of Transport on Friday to engage sector leadership on the worsening public transport challenges in the Greater Accra Region.
The visit follows mounting public complaints over bus shortages during peak hours, rising fares, and prolonged waiting times, particularly during morning and evening rush periods.
Discussions are expected to centre on measures already being rolled out by the ministry, as well as additional interventions to address the shortage of commercial vehicles and ease pressure on commuters.
As part of the engagement, the Vice President will also meet with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions at Kaneshie, Madina/Adentan, and selected locations, in search of sustainable solutions to the crisis.
The urgency of the talks comes on the back of widespread disruptions witnessed across Accra on Thursday evening, when acute bus shortages affected major routes.
Along the Achimota Old Road, some commuters resorted to boarding cargo trucks to get home, while passengers travelling from the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Amasaman and nearby communities waited for extended periods, with some standing for nearly an hour without securing transport.
Similar scenes were reported along other key corridors, as the scarcity of buses forced many commuters to seek alternative means of travel.
