Independent Presidential Candidate Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has commiserated with victims of a flood that occurred following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
Touring affected communities in Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, he shared in the pain of the thousands of residents along the lower Volta who had their households flooded by the spilled water.
Mr. Kyerematen earlier paid a courtesy call to the North Tongu District Chief Executive, Osborn Fenu, to officially inform him about his visit before paying homage to the Makralo of Mepe Traditional Area, Torgbe Korsi Nego VI.
Speaking at the palace, Mr. Kyerematen lamented the inability of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to fully deliver its mandate as it is under-resourced.
He indicated that the flooding incident should serve as a wake-up call for the government to adequately resource NADMO, and invest in early warning systems to prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future.
Mr. Kyerematen’s visit was to demonstrate his love for the Volta Region and commitment to the well-being and development of the people.
Over 100 communities along the lower Volta Lake in the North, South, and Central Tongu Districts in the Volta Region have been submerged by the spilled water from the Akosombo Dam.
Thousands of residents have been rendered homeless while properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis have been destroyed.
