Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the rank and file of the NPP, not to despair, but strongly keep hope alive for a brighter future for the party.
In a rallying call to executives, functionaries and members of the party in the Upper West Region on Sunday, during the party’s national Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia said history is on the side of the NPP to stage a strong comeback in 2028, adding that coupled with the party’s own quest to make amends, a brighter future is assured.
“History is on our side to reorganise and stage a comeback so we should all be optimistic and keep our hopes alive. We have done it before and we shall do it again in 2028 by the grace of God,” he said.
“The other day when I visited President Kufuor, he inspired me by reminding me of how he got 39% in 1996, and how the party rallied and won the 2000 elections.”
“I you look at history, President Akufo-Addo also lost the 2008 election, returned in 2012 and as a party, we fought hard to massively win in 2016. We have done it before and we can do it again so I urge all of you to keep hope alive.”
LESSONS LEARNT
Addressing issues surrounding the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia said report and recommendations by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated reasons for the NPP’s defeat, will serve as guide for the party, as it reorganises at all levels.
“So many of issues have been raised and recommendations made so we all have to get on board together and correct our mistakes as a party. We have learnt our lessons and we shall do better when we get the opportunity again.”
CALL FOR UNITY
While urging the party members to remain optimistic, Dr. Bawumia also urged them to embrace and uphold party unity, treating fellow party members with respect.
“Unity is key in everything we are doing. It is very important to prioritise the unity of our party by coming together as a family.”
“For example, we should avoid speaking ill against each other and the party, especially in the media,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The former Vice President added that such utterances against party members, are often used against the party by opponents, and referred to how the NDC used voices of NPP’s own members against the party, in the 2024 campaign.
The NPP’s national Thank You Tour, which started over a week ago, is currently in the northern part of the country.
